Meditation & Classes

Stuart Dole in the Sierras, 2003

Background

I became interested in meditation and the spiritual life quite early. In my high school years I read Alan Watts. But I didn't understand it. In college I joined the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation and lived there for over 30 years, practicing under the daily guidance of the teacher Eknath Easwaran.

At the Blue Mountain Center we meditated for several hours a day and read extensively in all the world's mystical traditions. There were frequent classes and often seminar-style meal time discussions covering a wide range of spiritual topics. This was a wonderful foundation for my subsequent explorations.

Since then I have studied many other forms of meditation and spiritual practice. I owe a great deal to Douglas Harding's unique style and experiments. This is what really got me to "see" for the first time. I am also grateful to the Lomi School somatics training program for introducing me to awareness meditation. I have also learned a lot about nature awareness and the "sense meditation" from the Kamana program .

Classes in Santa Rosa

A new series of classes is starting April 6, 2009. This series is eight weeks long, meeting on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00. There is a continuity to the classes, but you are more than welcome to drop in for any of the classes. We will have about an hour of discussion and teaching, followed by a half hour of meditation practice. Call or email for details. Suggested donation is $15 per class, on a sliding scale.

The classes will cover many styles of meditation, with instruction and a discussion of the benefits of the various styles.
